Description

This course features intensive hands-on training that focuses on installing, configuring, and managing Amazon Web Services (AWS). This course will introduce faculty on the architectural considerations and decisions necessary when building a highly available solution in the cloud. This course would be the first step in preparing for AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate certification.

Prerequisites

  • System administration experience (or understanding) on Microsoft Windows or Linux operating systems.
  • Understanding of basic networking.

Objectives

  • To be able to describe terminology and concepts as they relate to the AWS platform
  • How to navigate the AWS Management Console
  • How to configure and manage a cloud infrastructure with AWS Management Console

Instructor

John Vail is a Professor in the Department of Network Engineering Technology housed in the Advanced Technology Center at Florida State College at Jacksonville. He is a Subject Matter Expert with the Cyber Security & Information Systems Information Analysis Center, and most recent speaking engagements were the 2012 North American IPv6 Summit in Denver, CO, the 24th and 25th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning, E-LEARN 2013 - World Conference on E-Learning, 2014 Winter ICT Educator Conference, and EdMedia 2015 - World Conference on Educational Media and Technology (where he received an Outstanding Paper award). He was the Primary Investigator on iNoVATE - A Network Virtualization Project grant awarded by the National Project grant awarded by the National Science Foundation, and is Co-PI on iNoVATE-X (NSF ATE iNoVATE-Expansion Project that creates courses to align to the Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) certification, along with two additional courses: Virtual Internship and Virtual Capstone), and was a Cyber team member on the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Department of Labor grant. Additional research interests include big data analytics, cloud/virtualization, eLearning, and student engagement. John graduated from East Carolina University with a M.S. in Technology Systems with dual concentrations in Information Security and Computer Networking Management and recently completed over 30 hours of PhD level coursework in eLearning. His master's thesis is titled: “Small Busniness Information Security”. John also has over 20 years of experience as a project and operations manager.
